DEALING WITH “SERIOUS” COLLECTIONS

For several years I collected anything that had a French fleur-de-lis on it: candles, boxes, stationery, jewelry, napkin rings. You name it, I owned it if it had that distinctive, three-pronged insignia emblazoned on the item. Eventually my household became so seriously overrun with this symbol of French civilization and the American city of New Orleans that my husband begged for a moratorium. Even I was starting to tire of the look, so I ultimately complied with his request and informed my friends of the “freeze.”

That brings us to the question of what to do with this and similar collections: framed family photographs, ceramic frogs, Lalique figurines, classic cars, Civil War weaponry, silver mustard pots, antique linens, men's cuff links, women's beaded purses…and, lest we forget, nifty assortments of Mardi Gras feather boas!

Our legacy as a hunter-gatherer species is all too apparent when one considers the fascinating (and frightening) list of things people are prone to assemble under one roof. This can become a stumbling block, especially when you're seriously committed to simplifying your surroundings. Such accumulations of “dust catchers,” as one friend irreverently dubs them, can begin to give a person major heartburn—or heartache—depending on one's point of view.

Since I ultimately gained control over my fleur-de-lis addiction, I feel this gives me the wherewithal to ask what you are planning to do with the possessions that you, or someone you live with, have so diligently amassed over the years?

Not sure?

Well, that's a definite reason to move on to the next chapter of our rightsizing saga, wherein we fine-tune our selections, both mundane and treasured.
